NOODLES & SOSUPERSAM WITH LION’S SHARE LIVE
It has been what feels like a long time, since I put my mini falda on and danced hard enough to have to blast the A/C real quick! I’m sure y’all feel the same. In efforts to celebrate and generate positive sentiment and understanding about Asian American and Pacific Islander culture, Lion’s Share is hosting a week of free programming to showcase the brightest in music, dance, food and more. It is to our dismay that there has been an increase in hate crimes as well as negative rhetoric towards Asian Americans.
In continuation of their Memorial Day kick-off, Lion’s Share closed out their Tuesday night line-up hosted by Sesame Projects with a back to back DJ set with the duo SOSUPERSAM and NOODLES, two incredible filipino American DJ’s marking their way in the music and fashion industry. I have been a fan of Noodles from hearing her set through Soulection experience and overall obsessing over her sick style!
The set started with SOSUPERSAM and NOODLES proudly claiming their Filipino-American culture and saying “If you can’t tell we enjoy being Filipino-American. It’s really fun!”. SOSUPERSAM set it off with YEEK, a filipino-American artist that plays an approachable pop that's ever evolving.
As the set progressed and I started to feel my sweat gland activated, they started calling out to drop the jollibee emoji which I had to look up. Jollibee is a Filipino fast-food restaurant, the McDonalds of the Philippines that everyone is obsessed with. I have SOSUPERSAM and NOODLES to thank for now opening my eyes to what people claim is the best fried chicken called the Chickenjoy.
The tribute to “all the moms, all the titas and all the kuyas” by playing Lea Salonga and the Peggy Gou nod made the set feel like a real family dance party.
It is no wonder they had 14.5K concurrent viewers while Questlove Djing had 407, Mad Decent had 739 and RAC had 83.
Throughout the entire set, both NOODLES AND SOSUPERSAM had me simultaneously laughing, dancing and learning. Between the artists that I didn’t know were of Filipino-American heritage, and the funny faces they kept making or the artists I had to look up but had heard before-- It was exactly the kind of vibe we all needed to host a quarantine dance party in whatever room in our houses/apartments we used!
The week-long celebration is brought to you by Lion’s Share - a family of Asians creating safe spaces for the APAHM community. Go check out the rest of the DJ sets this week and the other amazing features like cooking classes, roundtable discussions and dance classes!
